# What Is Search Appearance?

Search Appearance is a Search Console dimension describing supported ways a result appeared in Google Search.

## Why it matters

It can reveal whether performance movement is concentrated in a specific result treatment rather than the whole property.

## How to use it

Query the dimension only where supported, compare equal periods, and keep unknown or unavailable values hidden instead of inventing labels.

## Limits and interpretation

Available values can change and not every Search feature is exposed identically through the API. It is not a generic “AI visibility” score.

## Common mistakes

Hard-coding unsupported appearance types; treating absence as zero; mixing deprecated values into evergreen dashboards.

GSC Pulse uses this concept inside a decision workflow and links to the underlying evidence instead of presenting the term as a decorative metric.
