## For Google, generative AI optimization remains SEO

Google says [AI Overviews](/glossary/ai-overviews-ai-mode/) and [AI Mode](/glossary/ai-overviews-ai-mode/) rely on core Search ranking and quality systems. Crawlability, unique value, strong content, relevant media, and Search Console measurement remain central.

## AEO and GEO in practice

Use the labels to describe real work: answer useful questions, expose clear facts, maintain entity consistency, support claims, and make important pages easy to retrieve.

## Where llms.txt fits

[llms.txt](/glossary/llms-txt-markdown/) is a community proposal for a curated Markdown map. Google explicitly says it does not use llms.txt or special AI markup for Search. GSC Pulse publishes it only as an experimental interoperability aid.

## Markdown mirrors

The proposal suggests appending index.html.md to directory URLs. GSC Pulse provides noindex mirrors while keeping HTML canonical.

## Crawler access

OAI-SearchBot is allowed for ChatGPT Search discovery. Anthropic documents that its bots honor [robots.txt](/glossary/robots-txt-ai-crawlers/).
